Sportsways Waterlung “Malibu Diver” Regulator: A Dive into Pioneering Excellence

Transport yourself back to the 1960s, an era of diving innovation and exploration, and discover the Sportsways Waterlung “Malibu Diver” 2nd stage regulator. This remarkable piece of diving equipment embodies a legacy of pioneering excellence, with its roots in the vision and ingenuity of Sam Lecocq, the founder and chief engineer of Sportsways.

Sportsways: Leading the Way in Diving Innovation:

Sportsways was a trailblazer in the world of diving, responsible for numerous product innovations that left an indelible mark on the industry. Sam Lecocq, the driving force behind the brand, was a true innovator. In 1958, Sportsways achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first manufacturer to introduce the single hose regulator to American divers, revolutionizing the way divers breathed underwater.

The “Sea-Vue” Submersible Pressure Gauge:

In 1959, Sportsways continued its streak of groundbreaking innovations by introducing the “Sea-Vue” submersible pressure gauge. This device allowed divers to monitor their air supply with precision, enhancing safety and peace of mind during underwater excursions.

Octopus Rig: A Diver’s Lifeline:

In 1971, Sportsways made history once again by offering the first octopus rig in the United States. This addition to diving gear provided divers with a reliable backup breathing source in emergency situations, further solidifying Sportsways’ reputation for innovation and safety.

The W-600: The Final Frontier:

In 1977, Sportsways-Waterlung introduced the W-600 regulator, marking the culmination of the “original” group’s efforts in regulator design and manufacturing. This regulator represented the pinnacle of their achievements, reflecting the dedication and expertise that had propelled Sportsways to the forefront of the diving industry.

Sam Lecocq’s Legacy:

Following the unfortunate passing of the company’s principal investor in the late 1970s, Sam Lecocq took the reins and purchased all the inventory. He continued to produce Sportsways products for several years until most of the parts were exhausted. Determined not to become a manufacturer himself, Sam made the decision to sell the name and all assets to Australian investors.

A Dive Brand Remembered:

The Sportsways legacy continued in Australia for an additional 14 years under Australian ownership, carrying the torch of innovation and quality in diving gear. Eventually, the brand gracefully faded into the sunset, leaving behind a rich history of pioneering achievements in diving.
