History of Bunn’s Double Hose RegulatorThe Bunn’s double hose regulator, widely known as the Sensivair, came from Bunn’s Diving Equipment Corporation Ltd in Hong Kong. Bunn’s created this model under license from Typhoon, a respected diving brand. Founded in 1958, Bunn’s played a crucial role in developing this innovative regulator, which gained popularity for its simplicity and functionality. Divers appreciated the Sensivair’s single-stage design and automatic reserve, which activated at 300 psi to enhance safety.
The Origins of Typhoon
Oscar Gugen founded Typhoon, originally known as E.T. Skinner, in 1947 after fleeing Europe during the war and resettling in England. He launched his business while also co-founding the British Sub Aqua Club, a significant organization in recreational diving. E.T. Skinner was the first UK company to produce diving suits, establishing itself as a leader in both diving and sailing gear. By the 1970s, Gugen rebranded the company as Typhoon and expanded with a facility in Redcar. This site, in 1976, introduced the world’s first lightweight drysuit.
Growth Under New Ownership
The Bibby family acquired Typhoon in 1996 and invested heavily in modernizing it. Their efforts helped Typhoon become the world’s largest dry suit manufacturer. At the same time, Bunn’s Diving Equipment produced the Sensivair regulator for international markets, expanding Typhoon’s reach. The straightforward design made the Sensivair ideal for short, safe dives, and it quickly became a favorite among divers.
Legacy of the Sensivair Regulator
Today, vintage diving enthusiasts still admire the Bunn’s Sensivair regulator. Its dependable design and automatic reserve made it both practical and memorable. Collectors appreciate its historical significance, recognizing the Sensivair as a lasting tribute to Bunn’s and Typhoon’s innovative contributions to diving.
