Introduction
The DX Over-Pressure, developed by Gagnan, represents a major advancement in single-stage regulators. Distinguished by its yellow, riveted nameplate, this regulator has made a significant impact on diving technology.
Design and Features
Firstly, the DX Over-Pressure boasts a shiny chrome nameplate side and a satin chrome yoke side. Notably, it was the last US Divers model to feature a removable exhaust horn. Additionally, the regulator’s labels are serially numbered, with earlier models bearing the Broxton Ave address (serial numbers 30,020 to 36,421) and later ones showing the new West Pico Blvd address (serial numbers 38,090 to 42,760).
Venturi Air System
When the DX Over-Pressure was introduced, it featured a distinctive venturi air system. Specifically, air was directed to the mouthpiece through a small tube inside the regulator intake hose. This tube ended in a metal nozzle within a metal mouthpiece tee, thereby focusing the air stream into the diver’s mouthpiece. However, some divers found that the high-velocity air flow was objectionable, highlighting a significant drawback.
Hose Assembly and Conversions
Initially, the hose assembly of the early DX Over-Pressure models consisted of separate hoses and a metal mouthpiece. Over time, many regulators were converted by replacing the small diameter hose fitting with a venturi orifice on the regulator body. Consequently, later models featured black hoses and straight nozzles secured with black Tinnerman-type clamps. During these conversions, divers often upgraded to the new Mistral Venturi Nozzle or installed nozzles with check valves.
Upgrades and Legacy
Following the introduction of the DW 1008 Mistral in 1958, US Divers implemented a factory upgrade incorporating the new Mistral nozzle. As a result, a “Mistral” sticker was added to the regulator body next to the identification label. This enhancement improved the regulator’s performance and reinforced its place in diving history.
