Classic Sherwood Scuba

Classic Sherwood Scuba Regulators – A Legacy of Reliability

Sherwood Scuba has earned a strong reputation for producing dependable regulators that stood the test of time. Many of its classic models, still favored by divers and collectors today, introduced innovative features that shaped scuba diving gear as we know it.

Sherwood 4000 (1970s)

The Sherwood 4000 hit the market in the 1970s. It featured an internal J-valve system built into the first stage, offering divers a reserve air warning—a vital feature before submersible pressure gauges became standard. Built for durability, the Sherwood 4000 could handle rugged underwater environments. Today, it remains a sought-after collectible, though parts are scarce and it’s no longer recommended for active diving.

Sherwood Brut (1980s–1990s)

Released in the early 1980s, the Sherwood Brut quickly gained popularity for its toughness and simplicity. It used a flow-by piston design and a dry-bleed system that vented a small stream of air to keep the internals dry—helpful in cold-water conditions. Its reliable performance made it a favorite in dive schools and rental fleets. Many Bruts from the ’90s are still in use thanks to available service kits.

Sherwood Oasis (1990s)

Sherwood launched the Oasis series in the 1990s with features aimed at diver comfort. Its Moisture Retention Vanes (MRVs) captured moisture from exhaled air and returned it during inhalation, reducing dry mouth. Like the Brut, it also used the dry-bleed system for internal dryness. Divers appreciated its smooth breathing and robust construction.

Sherwood Blizzard (1980s–1990s)

The Blizzard was Sherwood’s cold-water regulator, introduced in the 1980s. It featured an environmentally sealed first stage to prevent internal freezing and heat-exchange fins on the second stage to warm incoming air. This model earned a loyal following in colder regions and is still trusted today for its proven performance.

Servicing Classic Sherwood Regulators

Many classic Sherwood regulators—including the Brut, Oasis, and Blizzard—are still serviceable today. Replacement parts and service kits remain available for most 1980s–1990s models. However, early models like the Sherwood 4000 may be harder to maintain due to limited parts. Always consult a technician experienced with vintage regulators to ensure proper servicing.
