DESCO “Jack Browne” Full Face Diving Mask
WWII U.S. Navy Design for Surface-Supplied Commercial Diving
Overview
The DESCO “Jack Browne” Full Face Diving Mask is a proven piece of professional diving equipment. The U.S. Navy developed this design during World War II. Naval divers relied on it for decades, with service continuing into the mid-1980s.
DESCO later adapted the mask for commercial use. It became popular for surface-supplied dives that did not require heavy standard dress. The mask remains in use today because it is simple, durable, and reliable.
Air Delivery and Breathing Control
Air enters the mask through a non-return valve. This valve ensures one-way airflow and improves diver safety. The valve threads accept a 9/16″-18 oxygen fitting, making it compatible with standard surface-supply systems.
A manual air control valve, mounted on the right side, lets the diver regulate airflow. This control allows fine adjustment for comfort and breathing resistance throughout the dive.
Mask Construction and Fit
All DESCO full face masks follow the same core design. The mask uses a rigid brass frame for strength and durability. A compression-molded synthetic rubber face seal provides a secure seal against the diver’s face.
A five-point adjustable head harness distributes pressure evenly. Quick-release buckles allow fast removal when needed. This design delivers a tight fit without sacrificing comfort.
Visibility and Practical Use
A large acrylic viewing window provides excellent forward visibility. This feature makes the mask well suited to working dives. Divers can maintain awareness during inspection, construction, and maintenance tasks.
The straightforward layout also simplifies servicing. Commercial divers value this reliability during extended operations.
Modern DESCO Updates
DESCO has updated the Commercial Diving Mask while preserving its original form. The company replaced the original air valve with a smaller billet-machined needle valve. This change improves durability and airflow control.
DESCO also redesigned the exhaust valve. The new cover uses a precision-machined component instead of a stamped part. In-house manufacturing gives DESCO better control over quality and cost.
Communications Capability
DESCO can supply the Jack Browne mask with a factory-installed two-wire communication system. This option allows clear voice communication between the diver and the surface.
(See DESCO 59800B Communications System for compatibility.)
Historical Significance
The DESCO Jack Browne Full Face Mask represents a major step in surface-supplied diving history. It bridges the gap between WWII military diving and modern commercial operations.
Today, the mask stands as both a working professional tool and a historically important diving artifact.
