Extremely rare 50th anniversary FFESSM regulator #40
The FFESSM 50th Anniversary Aqualung Regulator: A Tribute to French Diving History
In 2005, the Fédération Française d’Études et de Sports Sous-Marins (FFESSM) celebrated its 50th anniversary with a truly special release. In partnership with Aqua Lung, FFESSM marked the milestone with a rare collector’s item — a limited-edition 50th Anniversary Regulator. Aqua Lung crafted only 100 units exclusively for FFESSM, making this one of the most sought-after commemorative regulators in diving history.
A Legacy of Innovation
This collaboration honored the legacy of French pioneers Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan, who developed the first Aqua-Lung in the 1940s. FFESSM, as the national body overseeing diving and underwater sports in France, had long been associated with progress in safe diving practices, training, and marine conservation. This commemorative regulator served as a nod to that legacy.
Design and Craftsmanship
Aqua Lung blended classic design with modern performance features. The regulator’s appearance paid homage to vintage double-hose models but incorporated updated technology for safe, functional use. Each unit featured high-grade chrome-plated brass and precision-machined parts, reflecting Aqua Lung’s commitment to quality.
The company engraved each regulator with the FFESSM and Aqua Lung logos, an individual serial number, and “50th Anniversary” markings. These details not only enhanced the visual appeal but also reinforced the item’s exclusivity and heritage.
A Collector’s Dream
FFESSM distributed these 100 units to key figures in the French diving community. Some went to distinguished instructors and longtime members, while others found homes in museums or private collections. The extremely limited availability made the regulator a prized piece among vintage scuba enthusiasts and collectors.
Divers rarely see these anniversary regulators available for sale. When one does appear, it attracts immediate attention on forums, auctions, and vintage equipment sites. Due to its historical value and rarity, the item holds both sentimental and monetary worth.
A Symbol Beneath the Surface
This regulator represents more than a celebration — it captures a movement. For fifty years, FFESSM led the way in shaping scuba diving in France. The 2005 anniversary release reminded the world of the country’s pioneering contributions and the ongoing passion for underwater exploration.
Even in today’s rapidly evolving scuba industry, this regulator holds its place as a meaningful symbol. It reflects a time when craftsmanship, innovation, and history met in a single piece of gear.
