Aqua-Lung DX Overpressure Breathing #34340
DX OVERPRESSURE Regulator: A Landmark in Single-Stage Design
The DX OVERPRESSURE regulator is a collector’s gem, recognized by its striking yellow riveted nameplate and classic chrome finish. Cagnan’s first single-stage regulator, it features a polished surface on the nameplate side and a satin finish on the yoke side. The DX OVERPRESSURE quickly became an icon in vintage diving gear.
Unique Design Elements and Address Markings
One standout feature of this model is its removable exhaust horn, a characteristic not seen in later U.S. Divers models. Early serial numbers (30,020 to 36,421) display the Broxton Avenue address. Later serial numbers (38,090 to 42,760) transitioned to the 11,201 West Pico Blvd address, reflecting a shift in production.
Advanced Air Delivery System
The DX OVERPRESSURE’s air delivery system was ahead of its time. It featured a small Venturi tube inside the supply hose that directed air into a metal nozzle within a “T” fitting. This design aimed airflow straight at the diver’s mouthpiece. While innovative, this high-velocity airflow sometimes proved uncomfortable for divers.
Hose Options and Custom Modifications
Early DX OVERPRESSURE models came with separate hoses and a metal nozzle assembly. Divers often customized their regulators by replacing the smaller hose fitting with a Venturi port nozzle inside the regulator. Later models included black hoses and a straight nozzle, secured with black Tinnerman clamps. Some also incorporated the Mistral Venturi Nozzle or nozzles with check valves, allowing better airflow control.
Upgrades and the “Mistral” Legacy
In 1958, U.S. Divers introduced an upgrade option to add the new Mistral nozzle. This enhancement remained available until 1970, boosting the regulator’s performance and making it even more popular among divers. Once upgraded, a “Mistral” sticker was placed on the regulator body near the identification label, signifying its improved capabilities and legacy.
