SPIRO Vintage Twin Cylinder Set with Early Manifold System

A Rare Piece of Early Scuba Engineering History

We are incredibly proud to showcase this vintage SPIRO twin cylinder scuba set, generously donated to the Vintage Scuba Gear collection by Peter McMahon.

Not only is this a beautiful display piece, but it also represents a critical transitional period in scuba diving history. At that time, equipment was evolving rapidly, and systems like this were at the forefront of underwater exploration. As a result, divers were able to push boundaries long before modern redundancy and instrumentation became standard.

About SPIRO (La Spirotechnique)

Manufactured by La Spirotechnique, the pioneering company founded by Jacques Cousteau and Émile Gagnan, SPIRO equipment sits firmly at the heart of recreational scuba diving history.

  • Origin: France
  • Era: Late 1950s to early 1960s
  • Legacy: Birthplace of the Aqua-Lung and twin-hose regulators

Therefore, this twin cylinder set is not just equipment it is directly connected to the origins of modern diving.

Key Features of This Twin Cylinder Set

Twin Steel Cylinders

Firstly, the set features a classic European twin-cylinder configuration.

  • Finished in original deep red coating
  • Designed for use with twin-hose regulators
  • Provides increased gas capacity compared to single cylinders of the era

As a result, divers were able to extend bottom time, which was a significant advantage at the time.

Early SPIRO Manifold System (Unusual Design)

However, the most fascinating feature is undoubtedly the early SPIRO manifold, which differs significantly from modern twinset designs.

  • Dual outlet design (left and right side ports)
  • Central gas-sharing system across both cylinders
  • Designed primarily for single regulator use, despite having two outlets
  • No isolation valve, meaning both cylinders function as one combined air supply

Although it appears that two regulators could be fitted, the system still operates as a single air source. Consequently, this highlights how early diving equipment prioritised simplicity over redundancy.

Pre-SPG Diving Era Engineering

In addition, this system comes from a time when divers did not rely on modern instruments.

  • No pressure gauges (SPGs)
  • Air management based on experience
  • Use of reserve systems (J-valve style mechanisms)

Therefore, divers needed to be highly aware of their breathing and surroundings. In contrast to today’s technology-heavy setups, this equipment demanded skill and discipline.

Original Harness and Bands

Furthermore, the set retains its original harness and mounting system.

Because of this, the set maintains a high level of authenticity, which is increasingly rare.

Historical Significance

Importantly, this SPIRO twin set represents a major step in the evolution of scuba diving:

  • Transition from single cylinders to twin systems
  • Early development of manifold technology
  • Increased focus on gas capacity and diver capability

At the same time, it reflects an era when divers relied more on experience than equipment, which makes it both historically and culturally significant.

Condition and Collector Appeal

Fortunately, this set remains in excellent original condition.

  • Clean cylinders with intact paint
  • Complete manifold assembly
  • Original harness and fittings

As a result, it holds strong appeal for collectors. Moreover, complete SPIRO twin sets like this are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially with original components intact.

A Special Thank You
