Tekna 2100 series
Product Story: Tekna Scuba Regulator with Side Exhaust
The Tekna scuba regulator with side exhaust, particularly the Tekna 2100 series, was one of the most advanced and compact regulators of its time. Released in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Tekna USA, these regulators became iconic for their sleek engineering, low-profile design, and unique exhaust positioning.
Unlike traditional center-exhaust regulators, the side exhaust configuration on Tekna regulators redirected exhaled bubbles away from the diver’s face and field of vision. This made it especially favored among underwater photographers and videographers who needed clear sightlines during a dive.
Key Features
-
Side Exhaust Design: The regulator’s exhaust port was located on the side of the second stage, preventing bubbles from rising in front of the diver’s mask.
-
Pilot-Operated Mechanism: A high-performance internal system reduced inhalation effort, offering superior breathing performance at depth.
-
Ultra-Miniature Form Factor: One of the smallest regulators of its era, the Tekna was ideal for divers seeking a lightweight and streamlined profile.
-
Material Options: Offered in both brass and reinforced plastic models—brass for durability, plastic for weight savings and corrosion resistance.
-
Cold Water Considerations: Although innovative, the Tekna’s side exhaust was not ideal for cold-water use due to potential freezing issues in the exhaust port.
-
Unique Sound Signature: Divers often noted the Tekna produced a distinct purge sound and had a very different exhaust feel due to the side routing.
Servicing and Collectibility
While Tekna regulators are no longer in production, they’ve developed a cult following among vintage scuba gear collectors. Original models with the side exhaust configuration—especially those in good condition—are now considered rare and highly collectible. Due to the complexity of the internal pilot system, only experienced technicians should attempt servicing these regulators.
